Programs under General ESL provides Intensive English classes.

Program:

There are five (5) levels of programs for ESL. Each level determines the student’s progress of their English Skills. Upon placement of the student’s ESL level, they are directed to take the appropriate program.

Beginner Level

This program is introduced to students with zero to no English literacy and would like to develop basic language skill.

  • EN GEN 100 Vocabulary I
  • EN GEN 101 Grammar I
  • EN GEN 102 Reading I

To complete this level, you must take three classes. EN GEN 100 focuses on vocabulary, and EN GEN 101 focuses on grammar, and EN GEN 102 focuses on reading. During these classes, students will begin to develop academic language skills.

Students are introduced to general ESL lessons of basic English drills. Students develop basic language skills needed in classroom and in day-to-day situations.

Common activities for this level include:

  • vocabulary drills,
  • grammar drills, and
  • reading comprehension.

Pre-Intermediate Level

This program is given to students with some basic English literacy. Student’s in this level MUST have completed Beginner Level or equivalent.

  • EN GEN 200 Writing I
  • EN GEN 201 Grammar II
  • EN GEN 202 Reading and Listening II

To complete this level, you must take three classes. EN GEN 200 focuses on vocabulary, and EN GEN 201 focuses on grammar, and EN GEN 202 focuses on reading. During these classes, students will have a good foundation of their language skills.

Students engage in basic communication inside and outside the classroom. Students are given grammar drills. Students undergo reading and listening drills using prepared and recorded materials.

Common activities for this level include:

  • composition drills,
  • grammar drills,
  • reading comprehension, and
  • listening comprehension.

Intermediate Level

This program is given to students that have completed Pre-Intermediate class and is able to function effectively in familiar and unfamiliar social and work situations.

  • EN GEN 300 Reading and Listening III
  • EN GEN 301 Grammar and Vocabulary I
  • EN GEN 302 Oral Communication I

To complete this level, you must take three classes. EN GEN 300 focuses on reading and listening, and EN GEN 301 focuses on grammar and vocabulary, and EN GEN 302 focuses on oral communication. During these classes, students will a solid foundation of their language skills.

Students engage in basic communication inside and outside the classroom. Students are given grammar drills. Students undergo reading and listening drills using prepared and recorded materials.

Common activities for this level include:

  • composition drills,
  • grammar drills,
  • reading comprehension, and
  • listening comprehension.

Pre-Advance Level

This program is given to students who effectively is able to self-monitor basic grammatical structures and introduction to more complex structures of fluency and communication skills.

  • EN GEN 400 Writing I
  • EN GEN 401 Grammar and Vocabulary II
  • EN GEN 402 Oral Communication II

To complete this level, you must take three classes. EN GEN 400 focuses on writing, and EN GEN 401 focuses on grammar and vocabulary, and EN GEN 402 focuses on oral communication. During these classes, students will master their language skills and develop consistency.

Students engage in advance level of grammar and vocabulary drills. Students are given grammar drills. Students undergo writing drills of business-related topics. Students prepare for speech presentation and public speaking.

Common activities for this level include:

  • writing drills,
  • grammar and vocabulary drills,
  • prepare for speech delivery, and
  • prepare for public speaking.

Advance Level

This program is given to students who demonstrate knowledge of written and spoken English well enough to pass the TOEFL and/or participate in a college or university program.

  • EN GEN 500 Composition I
  • EN GEN 501 Writing Workshop
  • EN GEN 502 Oral Communication III

To complete this level, you must take three classes. EN GEN 500 focuses on composition, and EN GEN 501 focuses on writing workshop, and EN GEN 502 focuses on oral communication. During these classes, students will maintain and solidify their language skills.

Students prepare for composition drills. Students undergoes a writing workshop to incorporate proper composition of business-related correspondences. Students finalize speech presentation and public speaking.

Common activities for this level include:

  • composition drills,
  • writing workshop,
  • present speech materials, and
  • present a business-related material in public.

Guide to the Program

Admission:

Complete the appropriate admissions application together with the payment of the application fee.

Submit a satisfactory official TOEFL or IELTS score report if English is not your first language.

Students take a placement test to determine their level in English before they enroll in any classes. Three sections of the test covers: Reading Skills, Language Usage and Sentence Meaning.

ESL have five (5) levels of programs. Upon completion of the placement test, the student would be placed on the appropriate program level.

Required level:

The required level to be admitted to this program is zero to no English literacy and is open for all non-native and native English speakers who would like to improve in their English skills.

Duration:

18 hours per week (minimum) / 3 hours per day class.

Each course has 75 hours of intensive language classroom instruction. By advice and recommendation of the ESL faculty, students may also be allowed to enroll in another English class related to their academic goals.

Qualifications:

General English programs are for students seeking to improve their English skills to apply in their daily lives, work and school. No specific level is required to be qualified for this program.
