Business English courses focus on particular vocabulary, topics and skills that are applicable to the workplace and enable you to communicate accurately. As a purpose-specific tool, the central goals of Business English are to carry the message across and to reach agreement.
Business English programs focuses on familiarity of words, phrases, expressions and be able to build fundamentals of English for speaking, listening, reading and writing. Through this program the student would be able to be competitive and globally ready to interact and work with people all over the world.
The Business English program provides an engaging way to learn English with terminologies used in a business environment, provides simulations or enactments of situations in the office, situational work-related encounters learn different types of correspondences, be prepared for speech presentations, gain confidence in public speaking, and enhance one’s ability with the English writing skills.
Program:
There are five (5) levels of programs for Business English. Students admitted to this program are given Level 1.
Level 1:
- EN BSS 100 Grammar and Vocabulary I
- EN BSS 101 Listening and Oral Communication I
- EN BSS 102 Written Communication I
To complete Level 1, students must take three classes. EN BSS 100 focuses on grammar and vocabulary, and EN BSS 101 focuses on listening and oral communication, and EN BSS 102 focuses on written communication. During these classes, students will begin to develop academic language skills.
Students are expected to be able to communicate and write English sentences with minimal grammatical errors. Students should be able to express ideas in good English sentence structure and converse comfortably with native speakers on familiar topics.
Common activities for this level include:
- grammar and vocabulary drills
- listening activities of prepared and recorded materials
- conversation exchanges of business-related topics that are familiar and unfamiliar
Level 2
- EN BSS 200 Grammar and Vocabulary II
- EN BSS 201 Reading and Vocabulary I
- EN BSS 202 Listening and Oral Communication II
To complete Level 2, students must take three classes. EN BSS 200 focuses on grammar and vocabulary, and EN BSS 201 focuses on reading and vocabulary, and EN BSS 202 focuses on listening and oral communication.
Students are expected to be able to interpret ideas and definition of new vocabularies. Students are introduced to proper intonation and pitch of words when speaking to be able to be clearly understood. Students will be able to listen and imitate expressions and words to communicate clearly with native English speakers.
Common activities for this level include:
- grammar and vocabulary drills
- comprehension and interpretation of reading materials
- listening to prepared and recorded materials
- small-group presentations of pre-academic topics
Level 3
- EN BSS 300 Written Communication II
- EN BSS 301 Oral Communication I
- EN BSS 302 Reading and Vocabulary II
To complete Level 3, students must take three classes. EN BSS 300 focuses on written communication, and EN BSS 301 focuses on oral communication, and EN BSS 302 focuses on reading and vocabulary.
Students are expected to write and compose grammatically correct English sentences regarding business-related topics. Students are introduced to speech presentations. Students will have a good foundation of business-related words, expressions and phrases to use when communicating.
Common activities for this level include:
- composition of ideas and thoughts on business-related topics
- speech presentations of pre-academic topics
- comprehension and familiarity with business-related terminologies
Level 4
- EN BSS 400 Reading
- EN BSS 401 Oral Communication II
- EN BSS 402 Grammar and Vocabulary III
To complete Level 4, students must take three classes. EN BSS 400 focuses on reading, and EN BSS 401 focuses on oral communication, and EN BSS 402 focuses on grammar and vocabulary.
Students are expected to deliver excellent speech or reading materials. Students will present business-related situations using correct expressions and phrases. Students will prepare composition of admission and application letters.
Common activities for this level include:
- delivery of intonation, pitch and proper accent using reading materials
- small-group presentations of pre-academic topics
- composition of business correspondences
- preparation for admission/application letters
Level 5
- EN BSS 500 Reading II
- EN BSS 501 Written Communication III
- EN BSS 502 Oral Communication III
To complete Level 5, students must take three classes. EN BSS 500 focuses on reading, and EN BSS 501 focuses on written communication, and EN BSS 502 focuses on oral communication.
Students are expected to write and compose grammatically correct English sentences regarding business-related topics. Students are introduced to speech presentations. Students will have a good foundation of business-related words, expressions and phrases to use when communicating.
Common activities for this level include:
- excellent delivery using reading materials
- final composition of admission/application letters
- final presentation of specific business-related topic in class
- final speech presentation
The Brief
Guide to the Program
Admission:
Complete the appropriate admissions application together with the payment of the application fee.
Submit a satisfactory official TOEFL or IELTS score report if English is not your first language.
Students take a placement test to determine their level in English before they enroll in any classes. Three sections of the test covers: Reading Skills, Language Usage and Sentence Meaning.
Admission to Business English is based on a placement test where the applicants must score and have a level of B1 or higher to be admitted.
Required level:
Requires an ESL Placement Test recommendation for ESL Level 2.
Duration:
18 hours per week (minimum) / 3 hours per day class.
Each course has 75 hours of intensive language classroom instruction. By advice and recommendation of the ESL faculty, students may also be allowed to enroll in another English class related to their academic goals.
Qualifications:
Business English program is for students seeking to meet the requirements to enroll into a degree program and have a pre-filed program of study form completed prior to enrollment.
