Third largest city

The city of Lyon is located to the south of Paris and is the third largest city and second largest urban area of France. It is the capital of the Metropolis of Lyon and the region of Auvergne- Rhone- Alpes. The city is famous for its historical and architectural landmarks, cuisine and gastronomy. The city is acknowledged for the production and weaving of silk, history of cinema and its light festival. The light festival is celebrated every year on the 8th of December , namely Fete des Lumieres.

Lyon is an economically stable city and is a major center for banking, chemical, pharmaceutical and biotech industries.  The city encompasses a substantial software industry laying  emphasis on video games, and in recent years has cultivated a growing local start-up sector. The city is ranked second in France and 40th globally is Mercer’s 2019 livability rankings.

The city has subtropical humid climate and is known as the gastronomy capital of the world carrying culinary arts tradition. Paris and Lyon are only two hours apart by train, a distance of about 300 miles, so their climates are about as similar as that of Boston and New York. Lyon inclines to have dryer weather in the winter.

Lyon is a student city with a lot to offer and with infinite scope of higher education opportunities. The creation of the Universite de Lyon or Higher education Research Network has helped rank the city as 2nd largest scientific hub. It has some of the best internationally renowned institutions like the  INSA de Lyon (engineering school), Ecole Centrale ( engineering school), EM Lyon (management school) , Ecole Normale Superieure Lyon (graduate school) and IAE Lyon (business and administration institute).

Every year, closely 15,000 foreign students come for education in Lyon and 700 exchange programs have been set up with foreign universities. The city has  three public universities – one for sciences and math (Lyon 1 – Claude Bernard), one for social sciences (Lyon 2 – Lumière), and a third for language, literature, and philosophy, with some economy and law (Lyon 3 – Jean Moulin).

It is a culturally rich country and is home to the football club Olympique Lyonnais and Lyon Hockey Club. Part of its historical sites were entitled as UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988.
